Tesla, the renowned electric vehicle manufacturer, has announced plans to double part imports from India. This news, shared by India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, signifies a deepening relationship between the American EV giant and the Indian automotive sector.
Goyal’s visit to Tesla’s Fremont manufacturing facility, although not featuring a meeting with CEO Elon Musk, was marked by optimism. Goyal praised the role of Indian engineers and finance professionals at Tesla and acknowledged the increasing relevance of Indian auto component suppliers within Tesla’s EV supply chain.
This step by Tesla aligns with ongoing dialogues about potential manufacturing and sales operations in India. Previously, Goyal stated Tesla’s Indian sourcing reached about $1 billion last year, showcasing the market’s growing importance.
Tesla’s involvement in India also includes talks about producing a budget-friendly vehicle tailored for the Indian and export markets, possibly priced near Rs 20 lakh. This initiative dovetails with governmental considerations to temporarily reduce import duties on electric vehicles, contingent on domestic production commitments.
Goyal’s US trip extended beyond Tesla, as he attended the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework and Apec meetings. There, he engaged with investors, presenting India as a prime destination for investment, banking on its demographic advantages, manufacturing strengths, and business-friendly environment.
Tesla’s decision reflects a strategic expansion of its supply chain and an exploration of India’s burgeoning automotive market. The Indian government’s active engagement with Tesla and similar entities signifies India’s ascent as a key player in global manufacturing.
