Sealing a landmark agreement at the Electric Vehicles & Mobility (EVM) Asia Summit 2023, the Malaysia Automotive Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) joined hands with Indonesia’s Automotive Institute (IOI). The collaboration aims to redefine and expand the auto sectors of both nations through a memorandum of understanding (MoU). This pivotal accord underscores the shared aspirations of both countries to become pivotal contributors within the rapidly transforming global automotive ecosystem.
According to MARii, the partnership prioritizes nurturing local business opportunities for automotive vendors along with small to medium industries (SMIs) across Malaysia and Indonesia. Orchestrating matchmaking sessions, coordinating international exhibitions, and facilitating joint ventures, the institutes intend to elevate these businesses into dominant roles on regional and international platforms.
“This is to promote growth in automotive manufacturing, parts localization, and exports, with the aim of becoming regional and global suppliers,” MARii articulated in a public announcement.
Peering into the long-term horizon, the MoU aims to lay the groundwork for the establishment of the ASEAN Automotive Institute. This proposed regional entity could galvanize engagement among ASEAN members, propelling shared objectives like optimizing supply chain management, initiating research for cleaner fuel alternatives, and advancing battery production capabilities. All these ambitious initiatives contribute to the long-range vision of transforming the automotive industry into an arena that’s not only more innovative but also environmentally sustainable.
Expressing optimism about this ambitious enterprise, Muhammad Zulhilmi Ahmad, Director of the Industrial Development Division at Malaysia’s Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti), stated that, with this strategic alliance, Malaysia aims to leverage IOI’s established expertise and resources with the ultimate objective of fostering collaborations that draw in substantial investments for the automotive ecosystem.
Ahmad added his convictions that this alliance could serve as a linchpin for benefits that would radiate beyond just Malaysia and Indonesia. “I am confident that this cooperation and collaboration will not only benefit both countries but also for the betterment of ASEAN countries as a whole to move towards recovery and shared prosperity for a sustainable future,” he said.
This mutually beneficial pact manifests as a pivotal moment within governmental strategies to stimulate relentless innovation and continual progress in the automotive arena. These objectives align closely with the larger global quest for a greener, more efficient, and interconnected tomorrow.
