Schaeffler unveils a pioneering mechatronic rear-wheel steering system, marking its series-production inauguration. This latest offering enhances the driving experience for an electric SUV crafted by a top-tier global vehicle manufacturer.
By introducing dynamic steering capabilities to the rear axle, Schaeffler’s innovation dramatically refines vehicle handling amidst urban chaos, accentuates lane-change security, and simplifies parking dynamics.
“Schaeffler has developed from a supplier of components for chassis systems to a provider of complete steering systems. We have built up extensive capabilities around steering systems in recent years because we see this as a strategic growth area for our business,” said Matthias Zink, CEO of Automotive Technologies at Schaeffler AG.
Planetary Roller Gear: A Game-Changer
Central to Schaeffler’s cutting-edge system is its planetary roller gear, —an unparalleled innovation derived from their precision mechanical engineering prowess. This design translates to a system that stands compact, and lightweight and promises effortless vehicular integration with an emphasis on silent operation.
The market’s embrace of this steering marvel stands overwhelmingly enthusiastic. With a premier customer already utilizing its capabilities and multiple automakers lining up for collaboration, Schaeffler’s steering system is poised to adorn multiple vehicle models set for production through 2023 and 2024.
The Pinnacle of Rear-Wheel Steering
Schaeffler’s design comprises two distinct sub-assemblies: a specialized planetary roller gear tailored for vehicular nuances, and a powerpack brimming with electronics, an electric motor, and intuitive software. Schaeffler’s comprehensive approach spans system development to its cohesive integration within customer vehicles.
This inventive gear system stands apart from traditional trapezoidal screw-driven systems offered by competitors. It surpasses the stringent ASIL D safety standards, delivering amplified efficiency, minimal friction, and instantaneous system responses. This precision is a boon for electric vehicle enthusiasts, offsetting the challenges posed by extended wheelbases resulting from underfloor battery configurations.
Schaeffler’s system accentuates lane-change stability, amplifies agility during sharp turns, and adeptly addresses the extended turning radius challenge. Its versatility also heightens the efficiency of automated lane change assist systems.
Unparalleled Advantages
A rich steering experience heightened safety, and luxurious ride comfort form just the beginning. Clément Feltz, Head of the Chassis business division at Schaeffler, emphasized the system’s design prowess, “Our rear-wheel steering system is more compact and requires less installation space in the vehicle. As a result, automakers can save up to 15 percent in weight compared to alternative systems.”
Acoustic finesse ensures the already whisper-quiet electric cars become an epitome of tranquility. Eager eyes can witness Schaeffler’s creation showcased at the 2023 IAA Mobility show in Munich, commencing September 5.
