ARAI Conference: In the pursuit of revolutionizing the automobile industry, The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) is ready to host the fourth edition of the International Conference on Automotive Materials and Manufacturing (AM&M) 2023. The conference will be held at ARAI’s Homologation Technology Centre (HTC), Chakan, Pune, from May 31 to June 2. This event is the result of a strategic alliance between ARAI, SAE India, and ASM International (Pune chapter).
Last year’s conference was shifted to an online platform due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but this year it is scheduled to take place in person.
The conference’s organizational team includes Medha Jambhale, the convener, along with Reji Mathai, director of ARAI, and senior deputy director Nitin Dhande. The primary focus of AM&M 2023, according to Dr. Mathai, is “Shaping Progressive Mobility through Emerging Materials and Manufacturing Technology.”
The auto industry’s current challenges include improving fuel efficiency, lightweighting of structures, meeting safety requirements, reducing environmental impact, shortening product development cycles, and adapting to changing mobility solutions such as e-mobility. All this while supporting the broader ‘atmanirbhar’ or self-reliance initiative, where materials and manufacturing play pivotal roles.
India has recently become a key player in the global automotive manufacturing landscape, now ranking third behind China and the United States. The country excels in two-wheeler and tractor manufacturing and ranks third for passenger cars. The auto component industry is simultaneously experiencing significant growth, stimulated by the government’s Product-linked Incentive Scheme worth Rs28,000 crores.
Jambhale unveiled that the Fatigue and Material Centre of Excellence (FMCE) has pioneered the development of material modelling in-house. “We have successfully developed this capability and are now offering these services to the industry,” she stated. The conference will launch a project involving material card database development for metals and future developments for plastics and composites.
The AM&M 2023 conference will showcase a blend of industrial, academic, and R&D perspectives, featuring more than 40 technical papers across 15 sessions spanning three days. Additionally, it will host 20 keynote addresses and plenary sessions by automotive experts.
One of the key attractions of the conference will be a panel discussion on ‘Material for Sustainable Mobility’, where leading experts, chief technology officers, researchers, and scientists will express their insights on the subject.
For over half a century, ARAI has backed the automotive industry in durability, fatigue, and materials. The dedicated FMCE was established in 2016 at the HTC to assist the industry with lightweighting, alternate material, material characterization, material model card development, forging process development, durability evaluation, environmental validation of specimen and product, and product optimization. This conference further solidifies ARAI’s commitment to fostering progress and innovation in the automotive industry.
