Tesla Massive Recall: Tesla Inc., the US electric vehicle behemoth, is set to recall and update the software of more than 1.1 million vehicles in China, both imported and locally manufactured, according to China’s market regulator, the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR). The recall encompasses various models including the imported Model S, Model X, Model 3, along with China-made Model 3 and Model Y.
The software update, effective from May 29, is in response to concerns raised about the regenerative braking system and accelerator pedal usage. Tesla’s recall has been registered under China’s stringent deficient vehicle recall regulations, though it remains uncertain if customers could be eligible for refunds or if they need to return their vehicles.
The key focus of the software update is to provide additional warnings about the use of accelerator pedals and to modify braking methods. Specifically, the updates will enable drivers to disable regenerative braking—a feature that Tesla had previously locked in its cars manufactured after 2020. This function captures energy during braking and redirects it to the batteries, extending the vehicle’s range. The feature, also known as one-pedal driving, had been a subject of debate among Chinese consumers, with some praising its efficiency while others expressing concerns over potential driving confusion and mishaps.
This recall follows a fatal accident involving a Model Y last November, which resulted in an ongoing investigation by Chinese authorities. While Tesla had previously stated that video footage and data showed no braking action during the incident, this move indicates a proactive step in addressing potential vehicle safety issues, solidifying their commitment to driver safety and regulatory compliance.
