Panasonic Automotive Systems has joined the Open Invention Network (OIN), a global open source patent mutual-use organization.
OIN was created to protect open source software and now includes more than 4,000 corporate members worldwide. Member companies participate in a royalty-free cross-licensing framework covering patents related to the Linux System, under which they agree not to assert patent rights over core Linux and related open source technologies.
Panasonic Automotive Systems has been consistently contributing to multiple open source software communities, including Automotive Grade Linux, as part of its long-term efforts to advance OSS technologies.

The company has played a key role in the standardization of VirtIO, a crucial virtualization technology for Software Defined Vehicles (SDVs), and has supported broader technological progress across the automotive sector.
By joining OIN, the company aims to bolster the growth of Linux and other open source technologies and further strengthen its engagement with OSS communities. Panasonic Automotive Systems also plans to expand its use of OSS to accelerate the development of advanced in-vehicle software required for the SDV era.
Keith Bergelt, CEO of OIN, commented, “Advanced automotive technology and connectivity are propelling ongoing innovation within the automotive industry. These innovations make the automobiles more integrated, safe, and secure.”

“Open source is a key driver of these capabilities. As a global leader in advanced automotive technology, we are pleased that Panasonic Automotive Systems is committed to patent non-aggression in core Linux and adjacent open source technologies,” he added.
Through its membership in OIN, Panasonic Automotive Systems is helping foster the robust development of open source technologies and build an environment that supports even more secure technological advancement.
