Toyota Motor revealed on Wednesday that it will recall 1.02 million vehicles across the United States due to a defect that could lead to rearview camera malfunctions, raising the likelihood of a crash, according to Reuters, citing the company.
The company stated that the recall covers certain 2022–2026 model-year Toyota and Lexus vehicles, including the Camry, Highlander, RAV4, Prius, and Lexus RX, LS, TX, GX, NX, and LX. It also extends to Subaru Solterra models equipped with the Panoramic View Monitor system.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a software glitch could cause the rearview camera image to freeze or go dark while the vehicle is in reverse, resulting in noncompliance with federal rear visibility standards.

Toyota discovered that if a vehicle is shifted into reverse within 0.7 to 2.6 seconds after ignition, a speed signal is detected during the first image frame process, and that process occurs within 1.1 to 1.4 seconds after shifting, the rearview image may freeze for as long as 1.8 seconds.
Toyota also found that if two random camera data processing errors occur within the first 12.5 seconds of startup, and the Parking Assist ECU shuts down during either of the brief 23-millisecond error events, the rearview camera may fail to operate the next time the ignition is turned on.

Last month, Toyota issued a recall for approximately 394,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to a camera defect that could hinder visibility and elevate crash risks. The recall covered a total of 393,838 vehicles, with non-hybrid Tundra models making up more than half.
The affected models included the 2022–2025 Tundra and Tundra Hybrid, as well as the 2023–2025 Sequoia Hybrid.
In recent years, automakers have issued recalls for millions of vehicles over rearview camera problems. Just last month, Ford recalled 3.3 million vehicles for similar issues, while Stellantis recalled nearly 1.2 million vehicles last year due to rear camera concerns.
