Volvo Cars introduced the all-new XC70, its first long-range plug-in hybrid SUV, on Wednesday. Built on Volvo’s new Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA) platform, the XC70 blends sleek design, cutting-edge safety features, and modern connectivity with hybrid power. The model is currently open for pre-orders in China, with a European launch anticipated in the near future. Positioned below the XC90 in Volvo’s range, the new model draws clear design inspiration from both the XC90 and its electric counterpart, the EX90.
The XC70 supports Volvo’s shift toward electrification by offering the plug-in hybrid with the longest electric-only driving range of any Volvo PHEV to date—exceeding 124 miles (200 kilometers) on the large-battery version, based on the Chinese test cycle.
The XC70 delivers a total range of more than 745 miles by combining its fuel tank and battery power. It features fast-charging technology, allowing the battery to reach 80% capacity in just 23 minutes. Notably, the XC70 includes bi-directional charging—a rare capability for plug-in hybrids—enabling it to power external devices.

Volvo has yet to officially disclose the full specifications of the XC70. According to Autocar, filings submitted to Chinese authorities indicate that the SUV will pair a 160bhp 1.5-liter petrol engine with an electric motor, powered by either a 21.2kWh or 39.64kWh battery. The documents also reveal that the vehicle will measure 4,815mm in length and 1,890mm in width.
Inside, the XC70 features a spacious cabin equipped with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 15.4-inch central touchscreen, and an optional 92-inch augmented reality head-up display. The infotainment system supports integrated digital services and voice control for seamless connectivity.
Users can access remote functions like cabin pre-conditioning via the Volvo Cars app, while over-the-air updates ensure the software stays up-to-date.
The XC70 also incorporates Volvo’s Safe Space Technology, which uses a combination of radars, cameras, and sensors to support safety features such as collision avoidance, cyclist-aware door alerts, lane change assistance, Park Pilot Assist, and enhanced navigation guidance.
