Chinese autonomous driving technology firm WeRide and ride-hailing leader Uber Technologies revealed on Tuesday that they have extended Robotaxi services to Al Reem and Al Maryah Islands in Abu Dhabi, in collaboration with the Integrated Transport Centre.
The service expansion is projected to significantly boost ride volumes, with coverage now extending to roughly half of Abu Dhabi’s central zone, spanning Al Reem, Al Maryah, Yas, and Saadiyat Islands, along with key highway routes connecting to Zayed International Airport.
Since its debut in Abu Dhabi in December 2024, the Robotaxi fleet has grown threefold. The companies are now setting sights on expanding to hundreds of autonomous vehicles across the city, with upcoming service extensions planned for Khalifa City, Masdar City, and additional parts of downtown Abu Dhabi before the year’s end.
WeRide and Uber run the most extensive Robotaxi network in the Middle East, with WeRide’s latest GXR model.

GRX is a specially designed, mass-produced autonomous vehicle built for large-scale commercial use and is capable of accommodating up to five passengers. Each car is expected to complete dozens of trips daily over a typical 12-hour shift, with most journeys covering more than six kilometers.
WeRide has also initiated fully autonomous vehicle testing in Abu Dhabi, with public availability expected in the coming months. Passengers can access WeRide Robotaxis in the newly added zones through either the Uber or TXAI mobile applications.
WeRide is a global pioneer in autonomous driving and the first publicly listed Robotaxi company. Its autonomous vehicles have been tested or deployed in more than 30 cities across 10 countries. It is also the first and only tech firm to have secured autonomous driving permits in six regions: China, France, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, the UAE, and the United States.
