India has started formulating the Automotive Mission Plan 2047 (AMP 2047) to position itself as a global leader in the automotive sector, the Ministry of Heavy Industries announced on Thursday.
The plan aims to enhance India’s share in global automotive trade through innovation, competitiveness, and sustainable development. The first meeting of the AMP 2047 sub-committees was held to set preliminary objectives and initiate discussions among key stakeholders.

“The vision for 2047 is not merely an aspiration but a strategic roadmap backed by concrete targets for sector growth, exports, and industry advancement,” said Dr Hanif Qureshi, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries. He emphasized the need to look beyond specific technologies or companies and focus on India’s overall global positioning.
The meeting brought together representatives from various ministries, including Power, Road Transport and Highways, Commerce, Petroleum and Natural Gas, and Environment, alongside industry bodies such as SIAM, ACMA, CII, and FICCI. Also present were academic institutions, think tanks, and testing agencies.
AMP 2047 aims to foster collaboration across Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), component makers, policymakers, researchers, and end users to tackle emerging challenges, including rapid technological shifts and infrastructure for electric mobility.

Seven expert-led sub-committees will drive the development of the plan, focusing on milestone targets for 2030, 2037, and 2047. Their insights will be compiled and presented to an apex committee chaired by the Secretary of the Ministry of Heavy Industries.
The ministry reiterated its commitment to building a self-reliant, innovative, and sustainable automotive ecosystem and expressed gratitude to stakeholders for supporting the vision of a developed India, Viksit Bharat, by 2047.
