Jaguar Land Rover has issued a recall for approximately 21,000 Range Rover Evoque SUVs across the United States, citing a malfunction in the front passenger airbag system.
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identified a flaw in the airbag system, cautioning that the malfunctioning airbags may heighten the chances of severe injury during a crash.
The recall applies to Range Rover Evoque vehicles manufactured between 2021 and 2025. According to the NHTSA, the airbags may tear upon deployment, releasing hot gases that could cause burns. Officials warn that the defect undermines the airbag’s ability to protect passengers during a collision.

The issue initially emerged in May 2023 during testing that uncovered irregular airbag deployments. Following an extensive investigation spanning several months, it was discovered that inconsistent folding techniques during assembly caused the airbag cushions to rupture upon inflation.
On June 30, JLR formally acknowledged the defect and promptly filed the necessary documentation with the NHTSA. The problematic airbags were supplied by Joyson Safety Systems Hungary, a prominent manufacturer in the global automotive safety industry.
JLR is once again under scrutiny in the United States, marking its second investigation in a matter of weeks. Back in late June, the NHTSA launched an independent investigation into more than 90,000 vehicles over suspected issues with steering knuckles that could impact vehicle stability and control.

While no accidents or injuries have been reported yet, Jaguar Land Rover is advising vehicle owners to schedule appointments with dealerships for complimentary repairs. The faulty airbag modules will be replaced at no cost. Dealerships are set to receive official notifications by July 21, with owners being informed via mail starting August 29. Additionally, customers who have previously paid for related repairs may qualify for reimbursement. The company has assured that all defect-related fixes will be carried out free of charge.
