The Volkswagen ID.4 is undergoing a complete transformation, with the brand confirming a major facelift inside and out. The redesigned model will showcase the brand’s new styling, marking a clear departure from the current version.
The ID.4 is approaching its second major update, following a round of key enhancements introduced for the 2024 model year. Inspired by the ID.2 all concept revealed in 2023, the upcoming ID.4 will showcase Volkswagen’s refreshed design language, flaunting a reworked front fascia, a more assertive stance, and sleek, refined body contours.
Volkswagen’s head of technical development, Kai Grünitz, told Autocar that the ID.3 will be the first to receive the upcoming design updates next year, with the ID.4 to follow. Kai Grünitz also confirmed that the updated ID.3 and ID.4 will feature entirely redesigned interiors, including new dashboards and user interfaces. One of the most notable changes is the return of physical buttons, replacing the haptic touch sliders previously used for functions like volume, temperature, and other key controls.

The current Volkswagen ID.4 is available with either a 52kWh or 77kWh battery paired with a single-motor rear-wheel-drive or dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup. For the upcoming refresh, Volkswagen has confirmed the introduction of new batteries and powertrains, though specific details on capacity and output remain undisclosed.
The company also compared the scale of updates to the shift from the Mk5 to Mk6 Golf—two models that shared the same platform but were distinct enough for the latter to be considered a new generation.
Volkswagen is expected to unveil the refreshed ID.4 by late 2026. As a cornerstone of the brand’s electric vehicle strategy, the ID.4 has emerged as a key player in the company’s push toward electrification. It performed strong sales in both the U.S. and Europe and, at one point, accounted for 12% of the company’s total sales in the United States.
