Volvo recalls more than 413,000 vehicles in the U.S. because of a software defect affecting the rearview camera. Newly released documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveal that the recall is due to a software fault, causing several Volvo models to fail compliance with the federal safety standard.
The extensive recall impacts various Volvo models, including S60 sedans from the 2023–2025 model years, manufactured between June 24, 2022, and June 21, 2024. It also covers V60 wagons produced from May 12, 2022, to June 28, 2024, alongside V60 Cross Country vehicles built between May 16, 2022, and April 18, 2025. Additionally, affected models include S90 sedans from 2022–2025, made from June 8, 2021, to January 25, 2025, and V90 Cross Country vehicles produced between June 1, 2021, and April 10, 2025. A limited number of 2022 model year V90s manufactured on October 14, 2021, are also part of the recall.

As reported by Auto Blog, the issue arises due to a software fault in vehicles featuring Google-built-in infotainment systems, which stops the rearview image from displaying on the screen when the car is switched to reverse. Consequently, these affected vehicles fail to meet the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 571.111, Section 6.2.6—a regulation introduced in 2018 mandating that all cars sold in the U.S. after the 2018 model year must have functional backup cameras.
The recall also affects several of Volvo’s popular SUVs and crossovers, including XC40 models from 2021–2025, manufactured between September 8, 2020, and April 18, 2025. It extends to 2022–2025 XC60s produced from May 20, 2021, to April 11, 2025, and 2023–2025 XC90s built between May 20, 2022, and April 11, 2025. Moreover, the recall covers 2022–2025 model year versions of the all-electric C40, assembled from October 19, 2021, to April 15, 2025.

The Volvo recall was declared shortly after Polestar revealed a similar issue, prompting the recall of around 28,000 Polestar 2 units. Volvo has stated that affected vehicle owners in the U.S. will be notified to schedule servicing starting June 24, with the issue resolved through a software update.
