BYD has unveiled the BYD Shenzen, the world’s largest roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) car carrier, as the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant accelerates its global expansion. The vessel, capable of transporting 9,200 vehicles, reflects BYD’s aggressive strategy to strengthen its presence in international markets following record-breaking sales in 2024.
Record Sales and Global Expansion
In 2024, BYD sold 4.25 million new energy vehicles (NEVs), a 40% increase over the previous year. This includes fully electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, positioning BYD to surpass global automakers like Ford, Honda, and Nissan in annual sales. The company aims to capitalize on this momentum in 2025 by expanding its global footprint.
Since January 2024, BYD has launched four ro-ro ships to facilitate its overseas expansion. The BYD Explorer No. 1 began operations in Europe and Brazil earlier this year, followed by the BYD Changzhou and BYD Hefei. These ships, capable of carrying up to 7,000 vehicles each, have already accelerated BYD’s international vehicle deliveries.
Environmentally Friendly Innovation
The BYD Shenzen, named after the company’s hometown, sets a new standard as the world’s largest and most environmentally friendly car carrier. For the first time, BYD incorporated box-type battery packs and shaft-belt generators to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency.
With a presence in over 100 countries and regions, BYD is challenging legacy automakers in key markets. The company has outpaced Toyota in Japan and launched its first EV in South Korea this week, priced at just over $20,000 to compete directly with local automakers.
In Thailand, where Japanese automakers have traditionally dominated, BYD has contributed to a significant market share decline for these brands, from 90% to 76% in the past two years. The company also continues to expand in Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia, with new vehicle launches planned for Mexico, Singapore, and other regions in 2025.
BYD’s rapid growth has prompted traditional automakers to adapt, with competitors like Nissan and Honda forming alliances to keep pace with the EV leader. BYD’s strategy, backed by its robust logistics network and innovative manufacturing capabilities, positions it for continued dominance in the global EV market.
