BYD, the global leader in new energy vehicles (NEVs), has confirmed its official entry into South Korea’s passenger car market. The company will hold a brand launch event in South Korea on January 16, marking the beginning of its passenger car sales just two days later. This move represents BYD’s expansion into the South Korean automotive market, following its earlier success in commercial vehicles such as buses, trucks, and forklifts, which it first introduced in 2016.
BYD Korea’s website nears Zero
As the countdown on BYD Korea’s website nears zero, the company is set to unveil its passenger car offerings to South Korean consumers. In November 2024, BYD Korea officially announced that it had “completed review to release passenger car brands in the domestic market,” and confirmed that the vehicles would be available for purchase by the start of 2025.
Dealer Partners Chosen for Local Sales and Service
In a significant development, South Korea’s Maeil Business Newspaper reported that BYD Korea has selected six dealer partners to handle sales and customer service for its passenger cars in the country. These dealer partners include DT Networks, Samchully EV, Harmony Automobile, Vision Mobility, GNB Mobility, and SS Motors. BYD has consistently adhered to a dealer system across the 99 countries and territories where it operates, further cementing its global approach to market expansion.
Competing with South Korea’s Automotive Giants
BYD’s entrance into South Korea’s competitive passenger car market will put it in direct competition with local automotive giants. South Korea is home to renowned manufacturers such as Hyundai, Kia, and Samsung, all of which have established a dominant presence in the global market. BYD’s decision to enter the market reflects its confidence in the growing demand for new energy vehicles, which aligns with South Korea’s commitment to green energy and sustainable transportation.
Building on Success in Japan and Other Markets
This move also follows BYD’s successful entry into Japan’s passenger car market. The company announced its entry into Japan on July 21, 2022, and began selling vehicles there on January 31, 2023. In Japan, BYD competes directly with well-established players like Toyota, Honda, and Nissan in their home market, making its mark in the region with affordable, high-quality electric vehicles.
Global Sales Growth and Market Expansion
In 2024, BYD achieved a significant milestone by selling 4,272,145 NEVs globally, a 41.26% increase from the previous year. Of these, 417,204 units were sold overseas, reflecting a remarkable 71.86% year-on-year growth. The company has made tremendous progress in expanding its global footprint, with operations in over 88 countries and regions, including over 400 cities.
Global Leader in EV and RE
Founded in 1995 and headquartered in Shenzhen, China, BYD initially gained recognition for its battery manufacturing. The company later expanded into the automotive industry, producing electric vehicles (EVs), buses, and trucks. Today, BYD is renowned for its innovation in the EV sector, particularly in the development of affordable and sustainable electric vehicles. Beyond transportation, the company is also a key player in renewable energy solutions, including solar panels and energy storage systems.
Strengthening the NEV Market
BYD’s expansion into South Korea’s passenger car market is part of its larger strategy to broaden its presence in key global markets. The company already has a strong foothold in regions such as China, Europe, the United States, Latin America, India, the Middle East, and even South Africa. In Europe, BYD’s electric vehicles, including its popular Atto 3 SUV, are gaining traction in countries like the UK, Germany, France, and Norway. The company has set up manufacturing facilities in Hungary and continues to expand its presence across the continent.
Greener, More Sustainable Future
As BYD continues its global expansion, its focus on clean energy and sustainable transportation remains central to its mission. The company’s vision of building a greener, more sustainable future is driving its growth, making BYD a key player in the worldwide shift toward electric vehicles and renewable energy solutions.
The upcoming launch in South Korea is expected to strengthen BYD’s position in the growing NEV market, offering consumers more options for eco-friendly vehicles and contributing to South Korea’s ambitions to reduce its carbon footprint.
