Hyundai Motor India plans to launch the Creta Electric SUV at the upcoming Bharat Mobility Global Auto Expo. The company predicts that passenger EV sales in India will double within the next two years, rising from the current volume of approximately 106,000 units. This growth is attributed to an influx of new launches by major automakers slated for 2025.
Hyundai India’s Chief Operating Officer, Tarun Garg, highlighted the evolving EV landscape, forecasting a significant uptick in EV penetration from 2.4% currently to 17% by 2030. Alongside the Creta Electric, Hyundai plans to introduce three additional EV models, aligning with its robust production expansion strategy. The company aims to increase its production capacity from the current 824,000 units to 1.1 million by 2028, driven by its new Pune plant. The facility’s Phase I, with a capacity of 170,000 units, is expected to commence operations in Q4 2025, followed by a second phase adding 80,000 units.
“If you look at the EV wholesale numbers, they will broadly be around 106,000 in 2023, with a penetration of 2.4%. By 2030, EV penetration could reach 17%. I believe EV volumes can double in the next two years,” said Garg, adding, “2026 will be the year for the trigger of EVs, with 2025 seeing major launches from every big manufacturer.”
The Creta Electric will compete with models such as the Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara, Mahindra BE 6, Tata Curvv, MG ZS EV, and Toyota Urban Cruiser EV. Hyundai claims the Creta Electric’s 51.4kWh battery variant can deliver a range of 473 kilometers on a full charge, while the 42kWh variant offers a range of 390 kilometers.
Hyundai is also making strides toward localizing the EV ecosystem in India. “Our battery packs are already localized with the Creta EV. For cells, we have partnered with Exide. We are also focusing on drivetrain and power electronics localization,” Garg noted.
The company’s success with the Creta model, which has sold over 1.1 million units, sets a promising stage for the Creta Electric. Hyundai’s share in the SUV segment reached 67.6% in 2024, significantly above the industry average of 54%.
Rural markets also reflect this trend, with SUVs contributing 57% of Hyundai’s sales. Meanwhile, CNG penetration has hit a record 13.1%, driven by increasing customer interest.
Hyundai is seeing a growing demand for advanced options because of premium features. 25% of its customers opt for automatic transmissions, 53% choose vehicles with sunroofs, and 15% adopt advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
