Toshiba Electronics Europe has launched engineering samples of its new TB9084FTG, a MOSFET gate driver IC designed for three-phase brushless DC (BLDC) motors. This cutting-edge device addresses the increasing adoption of BLDC motors in automotive applications, offering enhanced performance, compact design, and robust reliability.
The TB9084FTG aligns with the automotive industry’s shift from brushed DC motors to BLDC motors, which provide quieter operation and extended lifespan. The device is engineered to drive BLDC motors powering key body system applications, such as powered sliding doors, power tailgates, and adjustable seats. It is also suitable for improving the efficiency of electric pumps and fans.
Key Features and Optimisations
The TB9084FTG incorporates a range of optimised features:
- 6-Channel Gate-Driver Structure: Enables efficient control of external MOSFETs.
- Reverse Polarity Protection: Includes an additional gate-driver output for MOSFET control.
- Current Sensing and Communication: Features an operational amplifier for motor current sensing, SPI communication, and a motor emergency stop function.
- Advanced Protection Circuitry: Safeguards include under-voltage detection, charge pump overvoltage protection, thermal shutdown, and MOSFET drain-source voltage (VDS) monitoring.
Housed in a P-VQFN36-0606-0.50 package, the TB9084FTG measures just 6mm x 6mm, contributing to equipment miniaturisation. The package supports an operating temperature range of -40°C to +150°C, conforms to AEC-Q100 (Grade 0) standards, and includes a wettable flank structure to facilitate automated optical inspection (AOI) for solder joint reliability.
Toshiba aims to expand its lineup of gate driver ICs by integrating feedback from market research to meet evolving automotive needs. The company is committed to advancing electrification and enhancing the safety of automotive equipment through continuous product innovation.
