Volkswagen has provided a glimpse of its upcoming ID.2-based electric SUV, showcasing its commitment to an ambitious electric vehicle (EV) strategy despite the ongoing challenges in the global EV market, particularly in Europe. The teaser offers a silhouette of the subcompact SUV, which will be built on the foundation of the ID.2 All concept revealed in 2022.
Foundation for Entry-Level EVs
The ID.2 All concept has been pivotal in shaping Volkswagen’s entry-level EV lineup. Its design drew inspiration from the iconic Polo hatchback, which enjoys a legendary status in the global automotive market. The forthcoming SUV is expected to carry forward the ID.2 All’s design ethos, combining modern styling with hints of Volkswagen’s traditional design language.
Debut at the 2025 Munich Motor Show
According to a report by Autocar India, the production version of the ID.2 All concept will make its official debut at the 2025 Munich Motor Show. Volkswagen is also planning to showcase both the SUV and an all-electric hatchback, based on the same platform, as pre-production concepts in September 2024.
Design Highlights and Features
The teased image hints at several exterior features of the ID.2-based SUV. It is expected to boast a distinctive C-pillar with three vertical lines, a design detail reminiscent of the Maruti Suzuki Ignis. The front fascia will include sleek LED headlamps, a central VW logo, and chrome trim, maintaining a connection to its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts.
A gently sloping roofline lends the SUV a crossover-like appeal, while flared square wheel arches emphasize its robust stance. Volkswagen has yet to reveal the nameplate for the electric SUV, but its hatchback sibling is speculated to adopt the revered ‘Polo’ name.
Tech Boosts and Future Plans
Kai Grunitz, Volkswagen’s R&D chief, stated that both the hatchback and SUV are expected to grab headlines upon their unveiling in early 2026, when their final production-ready versions are revealed. The company is planning ‘substantial improvements’ for the existing ID range, starting in 2026. These enhancements include innovative designs that pay homage to Volkswagen’s heritage, lower battery costs, improved performance, and added functionalities.
While specific details about the powertrain or battery configuration remain undisclosed, Volkswagen’s advancements promise to elevate its competitive position in the EV market.
