Chinese automakers are hastening their global expansion, targeting African markets. With JETOUR Auto unveiling two new right-hand drive (RHD) models, DASHING and X70PLUS, China is boosting its presence in Johannesburg, South Africa.
In 2023, China exported 4.91 million vehicles, a 57.9% year-on-year increase, making it the world’s largest automobile exporter. This growth was driven by a 77.6% rise in new energy vehicle (NEV) exports, which surpassed 1.2 million units.
JETOUR Auto President Li Xueyong noted that global expansion presents significant opportunities for Chinese automakers, with JETOUR already establishing over 600 sales and service networks in more than 50 countries.
South Africa, a leading car market in Africa, has been a focus for Chinese automakers for over a decade. JETOUR plans to establish 40 sales networks and aims to sell 30,000 vehicles in South Africa over the next three years, according to Vice President Ke Chuandeng.
While South Africa’s car market is competitive and saturated, the shift toward NEVs in Africa offers new opportunities. NEV sales in South Africa surged from 896 units in 2021 to 7,746 in 2023, with the government aiming to increase NEV market share to 20% by 2025.
JETOUR sees significant potential in Africa, especially with its wealth of metal minerals like lithium and nickel, essential for NEV batteries. The company is focusing on introducing hybrid and electric models to meet growing demand.
JETOUR also launched its ‘Travel+’ strategy, integrating vehicles, people, and the environment into a comprehensive travel ecosystem. The company plans to expand its range of models, including off-road and hybrid vehicles, for African customers.
Additionally, JETOUR announced a partnership with the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) and the Discovery Channel to produce a documentary on cheetah conservation, as part of its broader corporate social responsibility efforts. The company will also adopt cheetahs and donate vehicles to support wildlife conservation.
With cumulative global sales exceeding 1.22 million units since its inception in 2018, JETOUR sold over 50,000 units in August this year alone. Looking forward, the company aims to further expand into right-hand drive markets and explore opportunities in the European Union.
