Oxa, a leader in self-driving vehicle software, has executed its third commercial deployment across the United States by joining forces with Beep, a key player in autonomous shared mobility solutions. This venture marks Oxa’s inaugural West Coast initiative, with Oxa Driver now operational on autonomous shuttles in a pilot project led by the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA).
The pilot, branded as PRESTO, serves the Rossmoor Walnut Creek community, a thriving hub for active seniors. Beep oversees the deployment of electric, autonomous shuttles, which navigate a predetermined route within Rossmoor, offering transport for up to seven seated passengers. Operating from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, these shuttles include a trained safety attendant on board to ensure a seamless experience.
Gavin Jackson, Oxa’s CEO, underscored the importance of this deployment as part of Oxa’s broader vision for Universal Autonomy. He noted the strategic significance of the Rossmoor community, home to over 9,000 residents, as an ideal environment to advance Oxa’s autonomous vehicle technology while delivering essential services to the area.
A key aspect of this deployment involves Oxa’s cutting-edge Oxa MetaDriver—a virtual testing and training platform that harnesses generative AI, digital twins, and simulation. Oxa MetaDriver accelerates the development and testing of self-driving technology, creating an extensive repository of synthetic scenarios, including complex edge cases such as low-visibility conditions and sudden obstacles.
Jackson emphasized that safety remains paramount at Oxa. The integration of Oxa MetaDriver with Oxa Driver establishes a robust safety framework for vehicles, attendants, and passengers alike. Virtual simulations enable validation and verification at speeds exponentially faster than real-world testing, ensuring comprehensive readiness prior to deployment.
