Morocco has ascended to the pinnacle of Africa’s automotive industry, surpassing South Africa in both production and export value, establishing a new benchmark for the continent.
The Kingdom’s automotive sector has shattered previous records, with exports of vehicles and components reaching 80.54 billion dirhams during the first half of 2024, marking a 9% increase compared to the same period last year. This follows a remarkable 28% surge in 2023, where exports soared to 141.76 billion dirhams.
For the first time, Morocco has definitively taken the lead as Africa’s top automobile producer. The industrial sector anticipates over 610,000 units rolling off production lines this year, with an impressive 90% slated for export. The nation’s production capacity stands at an impressive 1 million cars, underscoring its growing clout in the automotive world.
The Moroccan Economic Centre (CMC) recently spotlighted country’s role on the global stage, particularly as a critical supplier to the European automotive market. The rise of the electric vehicle (EV) battery segment has been identified as a transformative opportunity, likely to further solidify the Kingdom’s dominance in the sector.
A push toward developing the electric battery industry has attracted substantial international investments, driven by a broader effort to boost renewable energy initiatives and reduce the industrial sector’s carbon footprint.
