Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), China’s premier automotive lithium-ion battery maker, has initiated the construction of its inaugural battery plant in North China, specifically within the industrious confines of Beijing E-town, the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area. This new launch of CATL represents an augmentation of CATL’s auto sector chain.
With production planning to start in 2026 after two construction phases, the facility will occupy approximately 260,000 square meters. This development leverages Beijing’s major role as a main innovation in the automotive industry, an essential production base endowed with a wealth of talent. Wu Yingming, chairman of CATL’s supervisory board, highlights the market potential in Beijing, which is home to top-tier new energy vehicle manufacturers.
Wu elaborated on the mutual benefits expected from the integration of CATL’s technological aspect with Beijing’s resources, aimed at elevating supply chain capabilities across the Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei regions and catalyzing economic expansion in these areas. This project will enhance electric transportation and charging infrastructure through strategic partnerships with entities like Xiaomi and Beijing Automotive Group.
Li Ting, deputy head of the automobile and intelligent manufacturing industry unit at Beijing E-Town, articulated the project’s dedication to establishing a sustainable, high-quality development that could serve as a global benchmark for the new energy industry.
Beijing E-town already boasts a flourishing high-end and new energy automobile industry with an annual output value exceeding 200 billion yuan ($27.6 billion), representing nearly 60% of the city’s total industrial output. The district actively pursues the transformation of the conventional automobile sector towards more intelligent, electrified technologies while focusing on localizing core component supplies.
This area hosts prominent manufacturers like Beijing Benz, BAIC New Energy, and Xiaomi Auto, along with nearly 40 other domestic and international component enterprises, including Hella.
