London’s transportation infrastructure has been achieved with the full-scale deployment of Yunex Traffic’s innovative Urban Traffic Control (UTC) system, branded as UTC-UX. This deployment is a key component of Transport for London’s (TfL) Road to Optimization (RTO) program, designed to revitalize and future-proof the capital’s approach to road network management.
The rollout of the UTC-UX system marks a significant leap forward, completed within an expedient two-week timeframe, incorporating only five migration days. It now spans approximately 5,500 junctions and pedestrian crossings across London, supporting over 15,000 SCOOT links and integrating more than 16,000 SCOOT Detectors—an upgrade replacing the city’s previous, outdated traffic management system.
Carl Eddleston, TfL’s Director of Network Management and Resilience, highlighted the profound impact of the UTC-UX system. “This leading-edge traffic management solution will dramatically reshape our approach to road network operations, markedly reducing congestion and enhancing air quality. It represents a pivotal shift, enabling safer and more efficient mobility across London,” stated Eddleston.
Yunex Traffic’s hosted UTC-UX solution, accessible directly via a web browser, offers an intuitive interface with real-time system and junction statuses and user-friendly control features. The system also supports automatic updates, ensuring immediate access to the latest enhancements in usability and functionality for TfL’s traffic management team.
A critical advancement enabled by the UTC-UX system is its foundational role in the upcoming deployment of Yunex Traffic’s FUSION intelligent adaptive control solution. This innovative system is set to overhaul traffic signal control in London, supplanting the SCOOT system that has been operational for over three decades. FUSION will utilize contemporary data sources to optimize traffic flow, prioritizing policies that enhance healthier travel options and air quality.
“We are dedicated to maintaining London’s status as a dynamic, sustainable urban center. The new UTC system not only streamlines journey times and traffic flow but also elevates the overall quality of life by alleviating congestion and promoting cleaner air,” remarked Wilke Reints, Managing Director of Yunex Traffic in the UK.
This state-of-the-art traffic management initiative unfolded in three strategic phases, starting with the development of the new cloud-hosted UTC solution, progressing through the formulation of FUSION’s adaptive control algorithms. The concluding phase sees Yunex Traffic assuming responsibility for maintaining the UTC system for the duration of the contract.
