Casablanca, the North African economic titan, steps into the future of urban mobility with the launch of its sophisticated Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. This pivotal development, characterized by the deployment of 40 cutting-edge Mercedes-Benz CapaCity L buses from Daimler Buses to Casa Transports SA, signifies a transformative approach to public transport within the bustling metropolis.
Tasked with the operation of these high-capacity vehicles, RATP Dev will oversee the buses’ journey along the newly minted BRT corridors, inaugurated at the outset of March 2024. This initiative distinguishes itself through the implementation of dedicated lanes, ensuring uninterrupted service—a testament to the city’s dedication toward efficient, swift, and economically viable urban transit.
The BRT infrastructure, spanning 24.5 kilometers and featuring 42 stops, integrates seamlessly with the existing tramway, enhancing the metropolitan transit matrix. This strategic alignment aims to streamline traffic, curtail carbon emissions, and facilitate seamless commutes. With routes extending from west to east and connecting southwestern to northeastern districts, the network promises comprehensive urban coverage.
Each four-door, articulated CapaCity L bus accommodates up to 177 passengers, symbolizing Casablanca’s commitment to expanding its public transportation capacity. This endeavor aligns with the city’s environmental objectives, targeting a service domain of approximately 300,000 residents. The initiative pledges to diminish wait times to an impressive 5.5 minutes at peak intervals.
The deployment of an advanced Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) underscores Casablanca’s ambition to revolutionize urban transit. This technological framework guarantees optimized scheduling and seamless transfers through traffic signal prioritization and meticulous route surveillance, facilitating an interconnected transport ecosystem.
Accessibility and passenger comfort stand at the forefront of this project. The CapaCity L buses, presented in a distinctive gold-gray palette, merge aesthetics with functionality. Accommodations for passengers with limited mobility, environmental considerations through Euro VI diesel engines, and a high-performance air-conditioning system reflect the merger of innovation with environmental stewardship.
Subsidized ticketing, at six Dirhams per journey, encourages widespread use of public transport, reflecting a broader strategy to enhance urban living by alleviating congestion and minimizing ecological footprints.
The introduction of Casablanca’s BRT routes marks a significant milestone in urban transportation, embodying a visionary response to the complexities of city living. This initiative not only exemplifies a leap toward sustainable urban development but also serves as an exemplar of modern transport solutions on a global scale.
