Tesla has officially unveiled the facelifted 2025 Model Y, with sales beginning in China as the electric crossover undergoes significant updates to tackle rising competition globally.
Codenamed Project Juniper, the revised Model Y reflects last year’s upgrades to the Model 3, focusing on efficiency, refinement, and quality. Notable exterior changes include redesigned wraparound light bars at the front and rear, along with subtly reshaped bumpers. The SUV’s length has increased by 47mm, reaching 4797mm, while maintaining its aerodynamic advantage with a reduced drag coefficient of 0.22.
Inside, updates include a rear touchscreen, electrically folding rear seats for expanded boot space, and ventilated front seats with new fabric options designed for enhanced comfort. The car retains its centralized 15.4-inch touchscreen, running improved software for better responsiveness.
Tesla’s new Long Range All-Wheel Drive and Rear-Wheel Drive variants offer extended ranges of up to 447 and 368 miles per charge, respectively, under China’s Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle. Performance enhancements include a faster 0-60mph time of 4.3 seconds for the All-Wheel Drive variant, while the single motor version clocks in at 5.8 seconds. Both variants maintain a peak charging speed of 250kW.
The Model Y, which has not undergone major updates in nearly five years, now seeks to regain its leading position, addressing challenges posed by rivals offering similar or superior ranges at lower costs. The facelifted crossover aims to solidify its standing as Tesla’s most commercially successful vehicle, following a dip in sales.
Initial deliveries in China will commence in late February, with UK-specific details expected soon. Price adjustments in China suggest the updated Model Y may start at just under £50,000, compared to the current model’s £46,990.
